Girl's Dress Sew-Along Lesson 8: Sewing the Skirt

Lesson 8: Sewing the Skirt

We have tackled some challenging sewing in the past few days as we finished our armholes with the Burrito Method and put in a Skirt Placket. You can find those and all the previous lessons at here. Today we are going to take it nice and easy and do some simple sewing! As always, the video is right below!

Mark the Pocket Placement & Finish the Side Seam Allowances.

First use the purple marker to mark the dots for the pocket placement on both the pocket pieces and the skirt pieces. Finish the side edges of the skirt pieces and around the entire pocket piece with either a zig zag stitch or a serger. If using a zig zag stitch, zig zag in the seam allowance making sure the right swing of the needle goes off the edge of the fabric. If using a serger, do not cut off any of the seam allowance.

Attach the pockets.

Attach the Pocket to the Skirt.

Pin the pocket to the skirt, matching the pocket placement dots with right sides together. Stitch using a regular stitch length and 1/2" seam allowance from the top of the pocket to the bottom, back tacking at both ends. Press the pocket flat and then away from the skirt. With right sides together, pin the skirt pieces to each other at the side seams matching the waist, pockets and hem.

Sewing the side seams

Sew the Side Seams & Press.

Sew the side seams using a 1/2" seam allowance and starting at the waist edge, stitch down to the first dot, pivot at the dot and sew around the pocket bag to the next dot, pivot at that dot and sew down to the hem. Press the seams flat. Clip the seam allowance of the side seam above and below the pocket bag so the pocket can be pressed toward the front of the skirt and the side seams can be pressed open.

That's it for today - I hope you enjoyed this easier stitching! Have a wonderful weekend and I will see you on Monday to pipe our waist and gather our skirts!
