I am often asked by my customers how to find the grain on a knit fabric. There is some very conflicting advice out there! On the one hand, I have read that knits have no grain and on the other that you should find one of the vertical lines of the knit and follow that along the entire length of yardage- something that is easier said than done. As so often is the case, the truth lies somewhere in the middle! Below is a video showing you exactly how to find the grain on your knit fabric, or maybe I should say, it is a video that shows how to get close enough. Because while yes, knit fabrics do have a grain that should not be ignored, it is not as important as it is for a woven fabric.
I hope this helps the next time you are sewing with knits! Remember if you need more help sewing knit fabrics, check out my Just the Basics: Sewing with Knits Mini Course - it will get you quickly up to speed and sewing your first knit garment! Happy Sewing!
