Embellishing a purchased onesie with a simple applique and some easy embroidery makes an adorable and very useful gift for a new baby. In this tutorial, I show you step by step how to make the Little Whale Applique and provide some inspiration for additional designs. This is part of the Sewing for Baby Video Series where we are sewing the perfect Baby Layette. You can find the full series here. The video is below as well as step by step directions. Let's get started!
You will need the following supplies:
Scrap of Navy Cotton Knit for Whale
Scrap of White Cotton Knit for Whale Eye
Floss to match navy and white knits as well as DMC and
Blue Water Soluble Fabric Marker
(The above links are affiliate links and I receive a small commission if you purchase through the link.)
Trace the pattern onto the Onesie using the fabric marker. A lightbox or window is helpful for this. Cut out the whale piece and use to cut a body from the Navy Knit and an eye from the White Knit.
Use 2 strands of the matching floss, the embroidery needle and a blanket stitch to attach the whale body to the onesie.
Use 1 strand of white floss, the embroidery needle and simple whip stitches to attach the eye to the whale body.
Use 2 strands of the navy floss, the milliner's needle and stitch a 12 wrap bullion stitch to form the eye. Couch the bullion stitch into a curve.
The water, seagulls and sun are all stitched with 2 strands of floss, the embroidery needle and the stem stitch.
For an additional design to embellish a onesie, use the baby duck from this pattern. You will also find additional design ideas in the A to Z of Bullions.
